This fascinating homestay package is designed for those interested in learning how to use herbs in simple, natural ways to improve their everyday lives. Homestay with Russ and Patricia in their English countryside cottage, where they garden organically and cook with their homegrown vegetables, fruits, flowers and herbs. After living the busy city life in Tokyo, it was their dream to return to the gentle life of the English countryside and live in an eco-friendly way.

Wind down in their old, traditional, countryside home to relax and learn about the history of herbs and their many uses. Enjoy tasting a vast variety of delicious homemade herbal teas and foods.  Both Russ and Patricia are keen gardeners and cooks, who use herbs regularly, especially when cooking delicious meals for their homestay guests.  Experience eco-friendly living and gardening on a daily basis.

Russ regularly taught about herbs during his time as a garden lecturer and advisor in Japan. Patricia has studied about herbs for many years, from when she first qualified as an aromatherapist in 1991.

This homestay is particularly special for any followers of Venetia on NHK World who shares our love of a natural lifestyle.This homestay includes an unforgettable day visit to Keddleston Hall, Venetia's English birth home. This breathtaking neo-classical mansion built in the 1760s is a truly unforgettable sight for any visitor. This spectacular hall was used as a filming location in the 2008 movie 'The Duchess.'

Day 1: Arrival at your homestay destination (p.m.)

Day 2: Introduction to Herbs (a.m.)
Study popular English country garden herbs. Learn about their history, identification, preparation and preservation.

Cooking with Herbs (p.m.)
Study recipes for herb teas, salads, salad dressings, butters, oils, breads and cakes. Learn tips for tasty herb dishes. Help to cook one for dinner if you wish or purely enjoy eating it.

Day 3: Relaxation time (a.m.)
Relax in the peaceful garden, home, village or surrounding countryside. Enjoy studying the many books and DVDs about herbs if you wish.

Visit to a Specialist Herb Nursery (p.m.)
Have a relaxing visit to a local, countryside, specialist herb nursery to learn more about a large variety of herbs. Enjoy a delicious, Herby Afternoon Tea on your return.

Day 4: Keddleston Hall (All day)
View the unforgettable Kedleston Hall, built in 1765 by the world famous Robert Adam. This magnificent neo-classical mansion was built as 'a temple to the arts', to showcase the best paintings, sculpture and furniture of it's time.
Eat a delicious dinner in the former 18th-century kitchens, which are now the atmospheric restaurant. Relax within the original features of these rooms, whilst enjoying the comfort of the contemporary furnishings. Stroll around the beautifully landscaped park. Visit the gift shop for window shopping or buying.

Day 5: Relaxation time (a.m.)

Herbs for Healing & Beauty (p.m.)
Learn how to make a range of herb waters, creams or lotions that are of interest to you for your needs. Use herbs and herb essential oils.

Day 6: Growing Herbs (a.m.)
Learn about different herb seeds, how to sow and germinate them. Design a herb garden for a patio or small space for your future use.

Decorative, Aromatic & Household Uses of Herbs (p.m.)
Investigate how to use herb seeds and leaves to make aromatic rose petal pot pourri and lavender bags to use in your home or to give as handmade gifts on your return home.
